whip-ma-whop-ma gate, york (c) m.firholz 2005

This is shortest street in York and the one with the longest name! A minute stretch of roadway, it sits at the end of Colliergate.

In the 16th century, the name was 'Whitnourwhatnourgate,' but the present form emerged when the area became the site of the city pillory and whipping post where petty criminals were publicly flogged.
